Maria is the youngest of the four Winklestein sisters. She’s 8 during the first visit to Trilunium (Rise of the Three Moons). She tells Crown Prince Patrick she will never speak to him again when he informs her most worlds have two moons. As with her sisters, she remembers nothing of Trilunium, except as a dream.
In Land of the Moons she’s 12 years old. She sees something odd in the distance and follows the site until she’s separated from her sisters and the Odzooken princes.
She’s approached by a two-headed dragon offering her a delicious treat of graham crackers, marshmallows, and – most importantly – chocolate. Unable too resist, she follows them to a lair, where she’s held captive.
Unbeknownst to her, Prince Patrick has followed and negotiates to exchange himself for her. The dragon keeps them both prisoner in the lair.
Despite her aversion to Patrick, Maria allows herself to be comforted and protected by the older prince. They don’t know what happened, but they’re released.
The great dragon, Sofós Voskós, encourages them to climb on his back and flies them to a safe location some distance away.
Sofós Voskós returns to the lair, offering himself as an innocent sacrifice in their place.
When she and two of her sisters return to New Sargasso, she misses Charlotte, but understands the greater calling.
Her next return to Trilunium comes when she’s 14. She and Patrick have a truce. She’s not certain why she didn’t care for him at the beginning of her second trip.
She mourns when she realizes Charlotte (and Aaron) have been gone for nearly a thousand years Trilunium time. As they enter the Maze of the Silver Moons, Maria suggests they take a moment to ask Sofós Voskós for his help, but no one else listens to her. At every turn, she hangs back, furthering her belief that the rest of the group discounts her contributions.
When they leave, Maria understands better than the others that it’s unlikely she’ll ever see Emily again when Emily stays behind to rule Trilunium. Caleb returns with Maria and Anne to New Sargasso, while Patrick returns to a dying Odzoo.
The next trip to Trilunium comes two years later. Anne and Caleb leave their children behind in the care of Anne’s parents, who have never doubted their stories about Trilunium. A beaten and bruised Patrick is now King of Odzoo. The four of them work together to rid Trilunium of marauders, with the last heir to Queen Emiy’s throne dying in the process. Sofós Voskós crowns Anne queen of Trilunium.
Maria returns to New Sargasso to retrieve the children but is found unconscious by her parents. She doesn’t awake for several days to find Patrick also in New Sargasso.
They wed quickly, a marriage of convenience on Patrick’s side, though Maria has realized that she’s loved him for many years. They raise the twins as their own. Their own biological children don’t come along for many years.
The twin sons of Anne and Caleb disappear and don’t return. Maria and Patrick believe they’ve returned to Trilunium and will not be back.
New Sargasso is trying to stay out of World War II, but drafting young men into the army. The authorities, who have been suspicious of the disappearances in the family for years, wonder what happened to the twins.
Patrick leads the family into the woods to the cave with the portal to Trilunium. When they’re greeted by a rock slide, he tells Maria Trilunium is no more. They dig their way to the Worldless Valley, bringing their young children with them.
The cave to Trilunium is no longer accessible. Their youngest child wanders into another cave. They follow and find a world being created by a great silver wolf.
Memories of the creation of Trilunium flood back. The wolf reminds them of the prophecy surrounding Patrick in Trilunium and crowns Patrick king of this new land with Maria as his queen and co-regent.
